It actually took several tries to type “portfoli-oli-o,” so bear with me.
Last night I put together my portfolio; as in, the one I carry with me that makes me feel simultaneously important, accomplished, nervous, and self-conscious. Just seeing it, and thinking of how I have to show it to people who aren’t my husband, makes me want to hurl. I put a total of 10 pieces in it. Well, 10 art pieces. I also put some past work-related design and writing samples in it.
I’m worried because it’s such a big portfolio book — 24 double-sided pages, which means almost 50 pieces total. I’ve always heard that you should put only your BEST work in your portfolio — who really fills that thing up??
I’ve only been in school for about a year… it seems a little presumptuous to put every “good” piece in there. Not only would it take a long time to go through it, but they wouldn’t even be relevant after the first 20 or so… what, should I put in the three-minute gesture drawings from my drawing class? No, thanks. I’ll stick with the work that I am proud of and that I actually like.
On the other hand, there are so many blank pages that I feel compelled to put more in. But, that takes time, and I apparently have none of that. And I’m plum out of StudioTac.
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog.
